Riley’s Goal Powers No. 9 Terps Past No. 13 Ohio State, 1-0

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Freshman Max Riley’s first career goal could not have come at a better time as it propelled No. 9 Maryland (5-1-2, 2-0-1) to a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 13 Ohio State (5-1-3, 2-1-0).

The matchup between two top-15 teams lived up to the hype as the two sides were in an evenly-matched defensive battle all game. Shots on goal were extremely hard to come by and, once Riley converted in the 56th minute, the one goal was all the Terps needed to secure the victory.

With the win, the Terps handed Ohio State its first loss of the season. It was also the first time Maryland had shutout the Buckeyes since Oct. 25, 2019. The shutout was Jamie Lowell’s first of the season and the third of his career.

The game also served as the first Fearless Women campaign game of the season for the Terps, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Title IX.

The XI

Jamie Lowell (GK)

Luca Costabile (LB), Chris Rindov (LCB), William Kulvik (RCB), Nick Richardson (RB)

Joshua Bolma (MF), Malcolm Johnston (MF), Alex Nitzl (MF)

Breaking Down The Action

  • Neither team had many chances on target in the first 30 minutes of action. Griffin Dillon and Stefan Copetti each created good looks for the Terps, with Copetti’s shot hitting the post.
  • The first half came to a close with the game still scoreless and the Buckeyes holding a slim 5-3 shooting edge.
  • The Terps broke through in the 56th minute when Riley scored his first career goal. Joshua Bolma brought the ball down the side and then found Riley in front of the goal who calmly knocked it through.
  • Maryland kept up its strong defensive pressure for the remainder of time and the Terps held on for the massive win. William Kulvik made a key tackle in the box to break up a Buckeye opportunity.

Up Next

  • Maryland will stay at home and host Old Dominion on Friday at 7 pm at Ludwig Field. That game will air on Big Ten Plus.
