Cal Begins Pac-12 Play In LA



The Bears Take On No. 1 UCLA On Friday Night

BERKELEY – Cal looks to continue an eight-match unbeaten streak as the Bears begin conference play at No. 1 ranked UCLA on Friday evening at 8 p.m. 
 
Cal enters the weekend with a streak of 374:20 without allowing a goal. The Bears have posted four consecutive shutouts against Cal State Fullerton, Santa Clara, UNLV and Penn. Angelina Anderson was named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 12, while Sydney Collins was named Pac-12 Defender of the Week each of the past two weeks as the dup helped lead a Bears defense. .
 
The Bears defense has been fantastic so far in 2022 as the Bears have only allowed 24 shots on goal against in their nine contests, just 2.7 shots per game, Cal hasn’t allowed an opponent to score more than once in any game this year while posting five shutouts.
 
Cal broke out offensive this past week as Ari Manrique scored five points (2G, 1A) with a goal against UNLV and a goal and an assist in Cal’s 3-0 win over Penn. Jadyn Shinn added her first career goal against the Quakers while Paige Metayer added a third for the Bears in their highest-scoring game of the year.
 
This will be the 29th meeting between Cal and UCLA as the teams have played every year since 1994. Last year, the two teams went to double overtime in Westwood before UCLA was able to find a winner. Cal will return to Los Angeles looking for a different result this year. The game will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network at 8 p.m. 
 
BACK-TO-BACK
Sydney Collins was named Pac-12 defender of the week for the second straight week on 9/19 after she helped the Cal defense to two more shutouts against UNLV and Penn. The Bears have now shutout four consecutive opponents and have 374:20 of consecutive game time without giving up a goal. Collins and her teammates helped limit their opponents to only four shots on goal and four corner kicks across two games.
 
MANRIQUE LEADS HOT WEEK
Ari Manrique had her best week in a Cal shirt as the sophomore scored in games against UNLV and Penn to wrap up non-conference play. She also tallied an assist vs. Penn to score five points on the week, outscoring her point total from the 2021 season. Manrique’s play contributed to Cal scoring a team-best five goals over two games.
