No. 7 Duke Wins 1-0 at Elon

ELON, N.C. – No. 7 Duke (5-0-1, 1-0-1) returned to action in a non-conference matchup against Elon (5-2-0, 2-1-0) on Tuesday evening, defeating the Phoenix 1-0 at Rudd Field. Shakur Mohammed scored the lone goal of the match and the Duke defense helped Eliot Hamill secure his fourth shutout of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Goalkeeper Eliot Hamill was tested early, making a diving save within the first few of minutes of the contest to keep the Phoenix off the board.
  • Both teams showcased their strong defenses, with just seven combined total shots taken in the first 45 minutes.
  • The Blue Devils’ best scoring opportunity of the first half came within the final minute of the frame when Peter Stroud crossed a ball into the box towards Shakur Mohammed. The sophomore midfielder managed to head the ball on net but was unable to put it past the Elon goalkeeper.
  • Mohammed opened the Blue Devils’ ledger in the 57th minute off a free kick, firing his fourth goal of the season into the back of the net from 20 yards out.
  • Duke’s defense continued to hold strong in the 67th minute, as Hamill made yet another sprawling stop to keep the clean sheet intact.
  • The Blue Devils weathered a flurry of offensive efforts from the Phoenix to finish the game and secure the victory.
