Graham, Groff Honored with Team of the Week Accolades

DURHAM – After helping lead the third-ranked Duke women’s soccer team to a thrilling, 1-0, victory on the road at Syracuse on Friday, a pair of Blue Devils – Maggie Graham and Katie Groff – earned National Team of the Week recognition on Tuesday.

Graham picked up TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week honors, while Groff earned CollegeSoccerNews Team of the Week for their respective efforts.

A native of Atlanta, Ga., Graham collected the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to give Duke a 1-0 victory on the road at Syracuse.  Graham timed her leap for the header perfectly in front of the goal, off a feed from graduate student Mackenzie Pluck.  It marked the third straight contest Graham has scored against Syracuse and the fourth goal of her career against the Orange.

Groff played all 90 minutes and guided a Duke defense that limited Syracuse to only one shot in the second half.  She also placed a perfect feed late in the contest to the head of Michelle Cooper and the shot went off the crossbar.  Groff, who hails from Raleigh, N.C., helped Duke’s defense collect its third shutout of the season.

The loss for the Orange snapped a six-game winning streak.  With the win, Duke moved to 7-0-3 in ACC openers over the last 10 matches.  The Blue Devils improved to 6-2 overall on the year and 4-0 on the road.

Duke will next host Boston College on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium.  The match will be aired live on ACC Network Extra.
