Cougars Down Gaels, Close Nonconference with a Win

Moraga, Calif. – The Washington State women’s soccer team (6-1-1) closed its nonconference schedule with a 2-0 win at Saint Mary’s, Sunday afternoon. Senior transfer Brianna McReynolds scored her first goal as a Coug, and junior Margie Detrizio doubled the lead in the 87th minute for WSU’s victory in wet conditions at Saint Mary’s Stadium.
 
McReynolds opened her scoring account at WSU in the 35th minute, less than 10 minutes after entering the match, when freshman Lily Boyden delivered a cross from the right side into the area. McReynolds ran at the driven ball, holding off a defender while she headed home the opening goal, back across frame, and into the side netting.
 
The Cougars continued their offensive run of form throughout the contest, outshooting the Gaels 16-4, including 8-3 in the opening half.
 
Returning from the break, Saint Mary’s pressed forward, looking for the equalizer. In the 58th minute, SMC’s Isabella Santavicca placed a floating shot into upper right corner that looked like it would fall, when sophomore goalkeeper Nadia Cooper made an outstretched, diving save to secure the Cougar lead.
