Cardinals Shut Out Miami, 1-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women’s soccer team (4-1-2, 1-0-0) opened ACC play with a 1-0 win over Miami (3-2-2, 0-1-1) Saturday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Graduate student Maisie Whitsett broke the deadlock in the second half and the Cardinals secured their third-straight shutout in the win. With the win, the Cardinals have won four of their last five ACC openers dating back to 2018.

In the first half, the Cardinals had two quality chances with the first coming in the 18th minute. The Cards earned a corner and Addie Chester sent a lofted ball towards the far post. Karsyn Cherry rose above the Hurricanes defense and sent a driven header towards goal but it went just above the bar and out of play.

Later in the 32nd minute, Anouk Denton had space down the left side and brought it all the way into the attacking third from the back line. She sent a low pass towards the top of the box where Whitsett was making a run in. She dummied the pass and allowed it to go through to Mackenzie Geigle. Geigle wasted no time and sent a low shot that was just wide of the near post.

The score stayed deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the half. The Cardinals held a 7-2 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes of play. 

In the second half, the Cards nearly got on the scoreboard off a free kick. The free kick was just outside the box and Chester lined up to take it. Her attempt got over the wall and deflected off the bar down on the goal line and back into play. At the next stoppage, the play was…
