Wolverines Drop Big Ten Opener at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The University of Michigan women’s soccer team fell by a 1-0 score to the Maryland Terrapins in the Big Ten Conference opener for both sides on Friday night (Sept. 16) at Maryland’s Ludwig Field.

Michigan (5-3-1, 0-1-0 B1G) had its first chance of the match in the 13th minute, as senior Hannah Blake, who was returning to the lineup for the first time since the Butler match (Aug. 21), ripped a blistering effort from 25 yards out. However, the attempt from the top center was tipped narrowly out by Maryland goalkeeper Madeline Smith.

Nine minutes later, senior Lily Farkas‘ right-footed bender was stopped in traffic. Junior Sarah Bridenstine played a service in two minutes later from the right flank that was intended to be a cross in the direction of Sammi Woods, but the ball hit off the left post and kicked out toward the Maryland back line.

The Wolverines controlled the shot category in the first half, 4-3, with all-four attempts coming on frame. Michigan also heavily controlled the run of play in the opening half.
