Maryland Hosts Michigan on Friday for Big Ten Opener

COLLEGE PARK, MD. –  The University of Maryland women’s soccer team will kick off the Big Ten conference season with a Friday night matchup against the Michigan Wolverines at 7 pm. The match will be streamed on B1G+.

 THIS WEEK’S STORYLINES

series history    

  • The Terps have a 0-8-0 overall record with the Wolverines. Michigan and Maryland met in the 2021 season as the Terps fell in overtime by a score of 2-1 in Ann Arbor.    
  • The two teams have met in seven of the last eight seasons dating back to 2014. This is the first time the two teams have met in the Big Ten conference opener. 

Looking back to last week

  • Maryland battled with #24 Wake Forest last Thursday. It was a Demon Deacon goal in the 65th minute that was the deciding factor as the Terps dropped a 1-0 contest. 
  • The Terps then logged a Senior Day shutout on Sunday, battling Saint Joseph’s to a 0-0 draw. This game marks the second shutout of the season for Maryland.

new terps making an impact early 

  • Amanda Schafer made her way back into the starting lineup last week, logging significant minutes for the Maryland defense. Schafer played a big role in the lockdown defense for the Terps holding #24 Wake Forest to just five shots on goal in a 1-0 game. Schafer then went on to lead the team to a shutout draw against Saint Joseph’s, allowing the Hawks just three shots the whole game. 
  • Tahirah notched her first career start for Maryland against #24 Wake Forest logging a full 90 minutes on the Terp’s backline, holding the Demon Deacons to just five shots on goal. Turnage continued her solid defensive play on Sunday with her second consecutive start, helping Maryland to a shutout against Saint Joseph’s holding the Hawks to just three shots on goal the whole game.   
  • Six of the seven goals scored so far this season have been scored by Maryland newcomers

a New Era

  • Coach Meghan Ryan Nemzer continues her first season at the helm of the Maryland women’s soccer program. Coach Nemzer comes to Maryland after spending the previous 14 seasons on the coaching staff at Rutgers.
