CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman Sam Williams’ first career goal in the 52nd minute sealed a 1-0 victory for the University of North Carolina men’s soccer team over East Tennessee State on Tuesday night at Dorrance Field, moving the Tar Heels to 3-2 on the season while the Buccaneers drop to 3-2-1.
Akeim Clarke had the first shot of the night in the ninth minute, giving the Tar Heels a chance to take an early lead before the Bucs’ keeper made the stop. Continuing to apply pressure, Ahmad Al-Qaq had another good look seven minutes later with a strike to the bottom right which again was denied by Cole Hunter.
The home team dominated possession throughout the opening frame while its backline limited the visitors to just two shots, including none for the first 22 minutes of play. Carolina went into the break out-shooting ETSU 6-2, also holding a 4-0 advantage in corners.
UNC finally broke through in the 52nd minute to pull ahead for a 1-0 lead it would not give up. A pass from Key White connected with Williams on the right side, whose strike with his left foot to the far post from 22 yards out went right over the keeper’s gloves.
The Bucs had their best scoring chance in the 68th minute when Gabriel Ramos’ shot from the top of the box, but a diving save from Andrew Cordes prevented ETSU from equalizing. Cordes finished the night with three saves en route to the second clean sheet of his career.
