Sam Meza Named ACC Defensive Player Of The Week

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC junior midfielder Sam Meza was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced on Tuesday with the release of its weekly honors. It is the first weekly accolade of her career.

Meza helped No. 2 North Carolina post a 2-0 week with a 3-0 non-conference road win over No. 3 Duke on Thursday and a 2-1, come-from-behind win over UCF at home on Sunday. In the 132 total minutes she played last week, UNC did not allow a goal while Duke and UCF combined for just six shots. She made numerous superior defensive tackles and strips in both games, creating more possession for UNC. Meza also assisted on the Tar Heels’ second of three goals against Duke.

The No. 2 Tar Heels return to action Saturday, Sept. 17, against No. 5 Virginia on Dorrance Field. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start and will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
