BLACKSBURG – No. 4 South Carolina produced a pair of back-to-back goals in the second half to post a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Virginia Tech Thursday evening at Thompson Field.
Despite a valiant effort by the Hokies (5-1-1), who went ahead in the 19th minute via Natalie Mitchell’s second goal of the season, the Gamecocks escaped Blacksburg and remain unbeaten at 5-0-2.
How it Happened
Tech grabbed a 1-0 lead when Mitchell converted a penalty kick in the 19th minute off a handball in the box by South Carolina. The Hokies applied pressure up front for the majority of the opening stanza, limiting the Gamecock offensive attack in the process.
VT maintained the 1-0 advantage until the 57th minute when South Carolina’s Shae O’Rourke slipped a shot past a Tech defender and Lauren Hargrove for the equalizer. Catherine Barry, who assisted on O’Rourke’s goal, delivered the game-winner in the 59th minute when she ripped a left-footed shot from the left side of the box to the lower-right portion of goal.
