Inter and Bayern Munich kick off their campaigns in the Champions League on Wednesday night when they meet in Milan.

Inter come into the tie off the back of a derby defeat to rivals Milan, while Bayern were held by in-form Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of Wednesday’s game.

Current Form (Last Five Games)

Inter team news

Romelu Lukaku remains a big absentee for Inter and probably won’t feature here. However, he wants to return from his flexor injury before the international break, with next week’s clash with Viktoria Plzen marked for a comeback.

His absence means Simone Inzaghi’s two striker spots will be shared between Edin Dzeko, Lautaro Martinez and Joaquin Correa. It’s expected that the former two will start.

There could also be a debut for goalkeeper Andre Onana, who has watched Samir Handanovic retain the gloves so far this season.

Inter Starting 11 (3-5-2): Onana; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Brozovic, Calhanoglu, Dimarco; Martinez, Dzeko.
Substitutes: Handanovic, Acerbi, D’Ambrosio, Darmian, Gagliardini, Gosens, Mkhitaryan, Correa, Cordaz, Bellanova, Zanotti, Fontanarosa.

Bayern Munich team news

Bayern have no injury issues to contend with, meaning Julian Nagelsmann can pick a full strength side.

Leon Goretzka has recovered from knee surgery and is available again, though Nagelsmann might be tempted to keep him out of the starting XI.

Serge Gnabry and Lucas Hernandez will be pushing for recalls to the starting XI, but the disappointing 1-1 draw with Union Berlin will ensure a few players are dropped.

Bayern Munich Starting 11 (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Pavard, De Ligt, Hernandez, Davies; Kimmich, Sabitzer; Coman, Muller, Musiala; Mane.
Substitutes: Ulreich, Upamecano, Sane, Choupo-Moting, Gravenberch, Gnabry, Goretzka, Tel, Mazraoui, Stanisic.

In this group of death which also contains Barcelona, neither Inter nor Bayern can afford too many slip ups.

The Italian side have lost two of their last three league games and sit five points behind early leaders Atalanta, while a few draws have left Bayern trailing Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

Given their unbeaten record and Inter’s horrible run in the Champions League since winning the competition in 2010, Bayern strong-arming the Nerazzurri looks likely on Wednesday.

Prediction: Inter 1-2 Bayern Munich
