Premier League club Nottingham Forest reportedly made an attempt to sign Paulo Dybala as a free agent in the summer transfer window.
Forest had a bloody mental window, bringing in a grand total of 21 new players.
Their spending reached around £145million as they broke their transfer record by signing Taiwo Awoniyi before smashing it again with the signing of Morgan Gibbs-White.
The Reds’ busy summer has not paid off so far as they sit 19th in the top flight with one win, one draw and four losses from their opening six fixtures.
Saturday was a particularly disappointing day for Forest, who lost 3-2 at home to Bournemouth after being two goals up at half-time.
This result came a few days after a 6-0 drubbing at Manchester City.
In their squad against Bournemouth, Jack Colback was the only player who was at the club last season to sit on the bench.
Meanwhile, there were five players from their promotion campaign to be named in the starting XI versus the Cherries.
While Forest’s summer business was so busy that it is near-impossible to remember all of their new signings (that is an invitation, by the way) – they could have made one more, and what a signing it would have been.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Forest made an attempt to sign Dybala before he opted to join AS Roma following the expiry of his Juventus contract.
“Nottingham Forest also did a call for Paulo Dybala on a free,” Romano explained on his Here We Go Podcast.
“Yes, they tried! If you remember at one point, Dybala was Inter (Milan) but not closed, Roma but not agreed, Napoli but no agreement, so there were many possibilities and they tried to explore this possibility, saying ‘okay, what’s the situation with Dybala?’.
“This shows the ambition of Nottingham Forest, but in the end it was impossible. It was just a call and not a negotiation.”
While he was linked with a host of Serie A sides, there was some reported interest in Dybala from the Premier League.
Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool were all believed to be keen on signing the Argentine international.
All four did sign at least one new attacker in the summer window.
Most notably, Antony joined United for £85.5m.
