Bears Host Lancers Saturday

BERKELEY – The Cal men’s soccer team begins a four-game homestand when it hosts the California Baptist Lancers on Saturday at 1 p.m.  in the Golden Bears’ second game of the season on Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium.
 
After playing three of the first four games of the season on the road, Cal has a 0-1-3 record. The Lancers are 3-1-0.

The announcer for the Cal live stream this week is Dr. Derek Van Rheenen, the Executive Director of the Athletic Study Center a Cal men’s soccer alumnus and a member of the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame. Dr. Van Rheenen is also the Faculty Coordinator of the BSE-wide M.A. Program and the Faculty Director of the Cultural Studies of Sport in Education (CSSE) Master’s degree specialization for students studying the intersections of school and sport. 
 
Bears Tie UCs In Socal
In the Bears’ two most recent games, they tied UC Irvine, 1-1, on Sept. 2 and tied UC San Diego, 1-1, on Sept. 4 and have now played to three consecutive 1-1 ties, including a 1-1 result with Villanova on Aug. 28 in Berkeley.
 
Against the Anteaters, forward Nate Carrasco – assisted by midfielder Juan Martinez – staked Cal to a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute. But UCI’s Jake Means scored seconds from the final whistle, and the teams settled for the 1-1 result.
 
UCSD took a 1-0 lead over the Bears on Alessandro Allen’s penalty kick in the 71st minute. Cal forward Fahmi Ibrahim scored on a 20-yard blast in the 72nd minute for the equalizer.

  • After four games, Ibrahim leads Cal in goals (2) and points (4)
  • Goalkeeper and team captain Collin Travasos has compiled a 1.50 goals-against average while playing every minute in goal for the Bears this season
