Cards Suffer First Loss at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 10th-ranked University of Louisville soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday night, taking a 3-2 defeat against No. 5 Kentucky in Lexington.
 
Playing in its first road match of the season, Louisville (3-1-0) got off to a hot start on Tuesday, netting the match’s first goal in the 11th minute.
 
Sander Roed played a corner kick into the box that found the head of Josh Jones. Jones headed the ball toward the net and a Kentucky defender attempted to clear the ball but headed it into the net for the opening strike.
 
Kentucky (4-0-0) responded quickly, heading home a goal less than four minutes later to level the match at one.
 
A physical first half remained even at one, but the Cards nearly grabbed the advantage late in the half. Roed launched a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box that banged off the left post and stayed out in the closing minutes.
 
The Wildcats took their first lead shortly after halftime, jumping ahead 2-1 with a goal 93 seconds into the second half. After 27 more minutes of back-and-forth attacking, UK extended the margin to two with a third goal.
