NJ/NY Gotham FC's Ashlyn Harris undergoes knee surgery

NJ/NY Gotham FC goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris underwent successful knee surgery, bringing her one step closer to recovery.

The player announced the news on twitter to explain her absence from Gotham’s game on Sunday.

“I just underwent a successful right knee surgery on Wednesday,” Harris wrote. “I will not be at today’s game as I continue my recovery at home in FL. I wanted to wish the team the best of luck tonight. I will be back on the field in a few weeks.”

Her injury is just one of the team’s several setbacks this season. The roster has seen a variety of changes, as figures Allie Long and Imani Dorsey have been unavailable for the team, and 2021 NWSL Defender of the Year Caprice Dydasco was traded to the Houston Dash.

The lack of consistency on the field propelled a seven game losing streak, and inspired the departure head coach Scott Parkinson. Now, Gotham sits last in the NWSL standings with only 13 points and a record of 4W-12L-0D.

“For me, I know it’s frustrating and infuriating because it’s like, yes, I’ve been here for a while, and I’ve seen this club grow and want to continue to see it grow, but I also have to recognize so much change has happened in a very short amount of time and sometimes it takes a little bit for change. The level you want to get to will still take some time.” Imani Dorsey told Just Women’s Sports in July.

With no prospect of making the playoffs and the recent obroading of Hue Menzies as interim manager, Gotham will have an extended offseason to plan accordingly for the 2023 campaign.
