FiveThirtyEight Predictor: MBFC 24%, SD 51%, Draw 25%

Head-to-Head: Loyal SC has the early head-to-head advantage over Monterey Bay F.C. with a win in the only match played between the clubs to date, but have yet to play at Cardinale Stadium. The previous match between the sides resulted in a 1-0 result for San Diego at Torero Stadium on August 10.

Match Outlook: Coming off of two consecutive losses, three losses in the club’s previous four, and a weekend match that saw the Union’s five match unbeaten run at Cardinale Stadium snapped, the Crisp and Kelp will need a result at home against San Diego to keep pace in the playoff race out West.

Connections: In one of the most high-profile connections between two teams this season, Monterey Bay F.C. Sporting Director and Head Coach Frank Yallop will coach opposite Landon Donovan, who Yallop signed as an 18-year-old to Major League Soccer side San Jose Earthquakes in 2001.Yallop coached Donovan for three seasons in San Jose, before reuniting for two seasons at Los Angeles Galaxy in 2006-07.

Additional Notes: In just the second all-time regular season meeting with San Diego, the Union will look to get back into the playoff conversation with a home win over Loyal SC. A result of any kind would end Monterey Bay’s current two-match losing streak. Monterey Bay F.C. is 5-5-2 so far this season at home, while Loyal SC is 5-3-4 on the road.
