Purdue Edged at Kansas - Purdue Boilermakers

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Purdue soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss at Kansas on Thursday night at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas.

In an evenly-played game that saw the visitors create chances throughout the night, the Boilermakers (2-3-0) had six shots, three on goal. The Jayhawks scored the game’s only goal in the 88th minute, and their opportunities amounted to 15 shots, six on target.

Sophomore forward Gracie Dunaway led the team with two shots, one on goal, and four others had shots for Purdue. Fifth-year midfielder Sydney Duarte and junior midfielder Emily Mathews each registered a shot on goal in the contest. In goal, sophomore Sara Kile made five saves, one shy of her career high.

Dunaway had the game’s first chance just two minutes in, but her shot was high. Less than eight minutes later, the Boilermaker defense forced two Kansas shots to the right of goal.

Duarte nearly found the back of the net in the 18th minute. However, KU’s goalkeeper made a nice save and deflected the ball off the crossbar. After an off-target opportunity by junior forward Zoie Allen, Kile made her first save and then did a nice job to corral another ball, both off crosses into the box. Dunaway followed with a low shot that was saved.

Kile made a nice diving save to her right in the 31st minute, and she stopped another shot in the 38th minute on the final chance of the half for either team.

Purdue had four shots, two on target, to KU’s nine shots and four shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Kansas had the first two shots and three of the first four in the opening 17 minutes of the second half, though the Boilermaker defense had several blocks and forced another shot off the crossbar to withstand the pressure. Freshman forward Kayla Budish added a shot high in the 58th minute.

Neither team had a shot for the next 14 minutes, before the Jayhawks had two in the 86th and 87th minutes, the second which ended with a nice save made by Kile. The home side then found the back of the net in the 88th minute. At 87:09, Lexi Watts scored from Shira Elinav.

Purdue had an opportunity less than a minute later, but Mathews’ shot was saved.

The Boilermakers were out-shot 6-2 in the second half, and the Jayhawks had a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.
