Leicester City ‘very close’ to signing ex-Real Madrid defender in weirdest deadline day move

Leicester target Marcelo

Leicester City are reportedly ‘very close’ to signing Real Madrid legend Marcelo on a free transfer following his release from the La Liga giants.

Well, this is surely guaranteed to be the weirdest deadline day transfer if it comes off.

Marcelo is currently without a club as he departed Real Madrid earlier this summer when his contract expired.

Every Premier League club’s vacant shirt numbers ahead of transfer deadline

His time at the club ended on a high as Real Madrid beat Liverpool in the final of the Champions League at the end of the 2022/23 campaign. This was the fifth time Marcelo lifted this trophy.

The Brazilian international played just under 550 times for Real Madrid in his 16 seasons at the Spanish club.

He established himself as one of the best left-backs in the world during this spell but he is now nearing the end of his career at the age of 34.

It is a bit of a surprise that Marcelo is still available this late into the window, but if reports are to be believed, he could soon become a Premier League player.

This has come from an unconventional source, as Spanish YouTuber Marti Miras has revealed via his Spursito channel that a move to Leicester for Marcelo is on the cards.

Miras tweeted: “The former Real Madrid player is VERY CLOSE to signing for Leicester City.

“In the absence of passing a medical examination…

“I would sign until June 2023. More information in the next few hours…”

This is not exactly a reputable source, so Leicester City supporters should not get too excited.

This summer has been a troublesome one for the Foxes, with Wesley Fofana departing the club to join Chelsea for a fee up to £75m.

Earlier this summer, long-term number one Kasper Schmeichel left to join Ligue 1 outfit Nice.

To the surprise of some, Youri Tielemans remains at the club but with him out of contract next year, it is likely that he will depart for free next summer or in January for a reduced fee.

Leicester have replaced Fofana with £15m Reims centre-back Wout Faes.
