Last-Minute Goal Clinches WSU Win at Seattle

Denver

SEATTLE – The Washington State women’s soccer team (2-1-1) defeated Seattle University, 2-1, at Championship Field Thursday night. With just 45 seconds to play in the match, senior Grayson Lynch served a corner kick into the penalty area. Fifth-year senior Mykiaa Minniss tapped the ball back across the goal mouth where junior Jenna Studer pounced on the loose ball and scored the game-winning goal for the win.

The opening goal came 20 minutes into the contest when junior Margie Detrizio found space down the right side and played a low, driving ball across the 6-yard box. Senior Grayson Lynch cut across the penalty area to meet the ball and slotted the opening-goal into the near post, giving WSU a 1-0 lead and Lynch’s first goal of the season.

WSU controlled the opening half, outshooting the Redhawks 8-1, and carried a one-goal lead into the break. Returning for the second half, the Cougars looked to continue their dominance, but a goal by Seattle’s Kaylee Coatney in the 61st minute drew the game level.

With the match tied late, and the time winding down, both sides pressed for the winning goal. WSU’s Lynch led the team with four shots, including a near-miss in the 82nd minute from a tight angle after beating the SU goalkeeper. In total, the Cougars outshot the Redhawks 17-4, including 7-to-1 in shots on frame, and recorded 10 corner kicks, to Seattle four.
