Arizona’s Unbeaten Streak Ends at GCU

UAB

PHOENIX – The Arizona soccer team saw its unbeaten start to the 2022 season come to an end on Thursday in a 1-0 loss at Grand Canyon.

The teams combined for just two shots on goal in the match, but the Lopes made theirs count at the 53:25 mark of the match to take the lead and hang on for the win.

Arizona (2-1-1) had six shots in the match but created a number of other chances throughout the match that did not result in shots.

The Wildcats best opportunity came in the 73rd minute when Nyota Katembo raced down the right side with Jordan Hall joining her on the left side. As Katembo got into the box, the GCU keeper came out and tried to fall on the ball. Katembo was able to tap the ball away from the keeper and Hall swooped in to play it back to the top of the box where Megan Chelf was waiting. Chelf’s blast appeared destined for the right side of the goal but the GCU keeper was able to get back in position and clear the ball off the line to preserve the GCU lead.

The match marked the college debut for Arizona freshman defender Angela Baron, who arrived on campus last week after competing for Colombia at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2022 in Costa Rica, where she was a starting center back.

The next match for the Wildcats is on Sunday, Sept. 4 at home against UAB starting at 10:30 a.m. PT at Mulcahy Stadium. It is “International Day” at the match with fans encouraged to wear their favorite international soccer jersey to get a ticket for $4 at the gate. Tickets can be purchased online in advance for a low as $5.
