Newcastle ‘explore’ move for Arsenal-linked Tielemans as unnamed club submit ‘mystery’ £19m bid

Newcastle-Linked Tielemans

Newcastle United are reportedly ‘exploring’ a move for Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans amid talk that an unnamed club have bid £19m for the midfielder.

The race to sign Tielemans has dragged on far longer than most expected it to this summer.

With his contract up in 2023, the midfielder is understood to be available for £25-30m as Leicester want to avoid losing him for free next year.

Transfer gossip: Arsenal, Liverpool target subject of £19m ‘mystery’ bid as panic sets in

Arsenal have been linked with him throughout this summer, but they have focused on other targets with Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabio Vieira joining the club.

Tielemans has started three of Leicester’s opening four games of the 2022/23 campaign. They are without a win and have lost three in a row.

The Belgium international reportedly has no intention to extend his contract at The King Power Stadium as he seemingly wants to move to a club competing for a place in Europe.

On Wednesday morning it was reported that a ‘mystery’ £19m bid had arrived for Tielemans. It is unclear who this is from, with Arsenal and Liverpool both in the market for a midfielder.

But The Daily Mail may have an answer as they are reporting that Newcastle are ‘exploring the possibility’ of signing Tielemans.

The Magpies have ‘joined the race’ and they are attempting to establish if Tielemans ‘is an option for them late on in the window’.

Whether Newcastle have bid £19m or not, it will likely take a bigger fee for Leicester to cash in so late into the transfer window.

Interestingly, Fabrizio Romano has noted that Newcastle do want a new winger or midfielder “if there is an opportunity” to strengthen:

“Eddie Howe is doing a really great job at Newcastle United and the board are not afraid to financially invest in the Englishman’s squad,” Romano wrote for Caught Offside.

“However, even though the bulk of the club’s budget was spent on the signing of Alexander Isak for €65m (plus €5m in add-ons) from Real Sociedad, that doesn’t mean they won’t try to make some late additions.

“It will depend on the opportunities available though.

“For example, if there is an opportunity for a new winger or a new midfielder, Newcastle United will consider players for the present, as well as the future.

“But it is really important to remember that the club’s biggest and most important investment has already been made by bringing in Isak.”
