Dawgs Shift Focus to Jaguars in a Battle of the Unbeatens

STARKVILLE – Undefeated after the first month of the season, the Mississippi State soccer program’s unbeaten streak gets tested, yet again, on Thursday night (Sept. 1) when South Alabama (3-0-1) enters town. The 15th meeting between the programs will kickoff at 6:30 p.m. CT on SECN+.

“We’re looking forward to challenging ourselves with an opposition such as South Alabama,” head coach James Armstrong said. “They’re unbeaten just like us, and very well coached, so we’re going to need the crowd to get behind the team, as they have done so all season.”

South Alabama enters Thursday after blowing past McNeese State, 7-0. Four different Jaguars found the back of the net in the run-away victory. The Jaguar backline only gave up two total shots in the 90 minutes, with only one getting fired on frame. MSU (3-0-1), meanwhile, gets ready for its third of four-straight home matches. In its last outing, the game-winning goal was, once again, scored by an underclassman. For the fourth consecutive match, MSU will enter the contest averaging more shots per game than its opponent.

W, 1-0 vs. Minnesota
The Bulldogs picked up their second consecutive shutout, beating Minnesota, 1-0. For the second-straight match, Maggie Wadsworth scored the game-winner. A pair of Dawgs grabbed the assist, as Haley McWhirter played the ball off to Hannah Telleysh who would lay a one-touch pass directly toward an oncoming Wadsworth. It’s now the ninth career shutout for GK Maddy Anderson.

The first two goals of Maggie Wadsworth’s career have been logged as game-winners for MSU. The freshman has only shot six shots this season, however, all six have been on goal, allowing the Flowery Branch, Ga., native to sit comfortably at a 1.000 SOG%.

Goalkeeper Maddy Anderson has led the charge in the back, posting three shutouts in four games. The junior sits in MSU’s career top-five for: goals allowed average (1.10), shutouts (9) and wins (13).
