August 30, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)Sacramento Republic FC News Release

Sacramento, Calif. – On Thursday, September 1 at 12:30 p.m., Sacramento Republic FC, International Rescue Committee, Sacramento State, and Sacramento State Athletics will come together to unveil two new futsal courts at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade neighborhood.

The unused, dilapidated tennis courts have been refurbished to provide a new, safe space in a neighborhood that is home to many disadvantaged youth and a high population of refugee and immigrant families. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Sacramento has the largest population of Afghan immigrants and refugees in the country, with the majority of these families living in the Arden-Arcade neighborhood. These families face many challenges during resettlement – from finding housing and employment, to receiving education for their children, to connecting with their new community.

Through additional funding provided by Supervisor Rich Desmond and local business owners Roger Niello and Tim Cahill, the courts will serve as a place for the community to gather and celebrate the neighborhood’s diversity both on and off the pitch.

To celebrate the partnership that built the courts, Republic FC Youth Training Programs will host a free clinic at 1:30 p.m. for students from nearby Greer Elementary School. All participants will receive a free soccer ball and ticket to an upcoming Republic FC match.

This marks the 9th and 10th courts developed by Republic FC and its partners. Most recently, the club joined with community and city partners to provide futsal courts at the new Del Paso Heights Sports Complex in north Sacramento. Other projects include the Carrillo Courts at Northgate Park and the Maple Park Futsal Courts in South Sacramento.
