Neal Maypay couldn't play for Everton at Leeds despite joining the club last Friday

Everton’s £15m new boy Neal Maupay is DENIED the chance to make his debut at Leeds after the bank holiday meant he couldn’t be registered by the Premier League in time for the trip to Elland Road

  • New Everton signing Neal Maupay missed Everton’s game with Leeds today
  • He joined from Brighton last week but the Premier League stopped him playing
  • Players have to be registered before 12pm on the working day prior to a game
  • Monday’s bank holiday meant he couldn’t play despite signing last Friday

Neal Maupay was denied the chance to make his Everton debut tonight after he was caught up in red tape with the Premier League.

Maupay’s £15million move from Brighton to Goodison Park was registered by the club at 4pm last Friday and Everton knew he would not be able to make an immediate start at Brentford the following day but they expected him to be available for the trip to Elland Road.

The Frenchman has trained with Everton all weekend but manager Frank Lampard was left furious when finding out that the Premier League said he was ineligible despite this being the second row of matches since his signing was completed.

The Premier League insist a player must be registered before 12pm the previous working day ahead of a fixture but Monday’s Bank Holiday stopped the process from being completed.

‘We registered Neale on Friday afternoon at four o’clock,’ Lampard confirmed. ‘The Premier League haven’t been able to register him since. There must be one working day but we have had three non-working days but four days of him being our player.

‘I wish I had the non-working days that the Premier League seem to have. It’s amazing that we can’t register him.’
