Know Your Opponent: Louisville City FC

Three Takeaways from #SACvSA - OurSports Central

August 30, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL)Sacramento Republic FC News Release

For the first time ever, Republic FC will take on Louisville City FC. The Eastern Conference leaders have been amongst the best in the entire league this season, winning the second-most games of any club. It’s sure to be a good one at Lynn Family Stadium as Sacramento sets out against one of its strongest opponents of the year while balancing preparation for next week’s Open Cup Final

Last Week’s Drama

For just the fourth time this season, Louisville dropped points, falling 1-0 to Miami FC in their second straight away match. After the South Florida side took a lead four minutes in, LouCity spent the remaining 86 minutes knocking on the door, but five saves from Connor Sparrow kept them out of net. The result was their first defeat and just their second non-winning result since June 5.

The club takes the pitch again Wednesday against Indy Eleven, their most frequent historical opponent who they split points on March 26. Indy enters that contest days after breaking a 12-match winless streak over the weekend.

Louisville This Season

Led by MLS veteran Danny Cruz, the club has been among the best in the entire league in 2022. They entered the week second in clean sheets with 13, fourth in scoring at 49 goals, and as the stingiest defensive team in USL Championship – they’re the only team with less than 20 goals conceded on the season, with 17 entering the week. Entering their Wednesday match, claiming just one point secures the club a playoff berth.

While they boast no significant outlier, it’s a sign of the strength of their side from top to bottom. Without one of the league’s top all-time scorers in Cam Lancaster for most of the season, a collective unit of Brian Ownby, Wilson Harris and Sean Totsch have picked up the slack. Defensively, a backline combination primarily featuring Wesley Charpie and Amadou Dia has allowed the least pressure of any club all season – allowing just under 200 shots on target for the season.

Head to Head

Saturday marks the first ever contest between Sacramento (12-7-7, 43 pts.) and Louisville City (17-4-4, 55 pts). However, this season’s more balanced schedule has had the clubs face off with 11 similar opponents. In those contests, Republic FC is 9-2-4, and Louisville is 9-3-3.
