UCLA earned a clean sweep in the Pac-12 women’s soccer weekly awards. Sunshine Fontes was selected the Offensive Player of the Week, Maya Evans received the nod for Defensive Player of the Week, and Lauren Brzykcy was named the Goalkeeper of the Week.
Fontes, a senior from Wahiawa, Hawaii, earned her first Pac-12 weekly nod after a four-goal week in which she netted both game-winning goals. Fontes recorded the Pac-12’s first hat trick of the season in a 6-0 win over CSUN on Aug. 25 and then scored the only goal in a 1-0 win at Santa Clara on Aug. 28. The hat trick was the 28th in program history. Fontes is currently tied for the Pac-12 lead in goals, points and game-winning goals and is sixth nationally with four goals scored.
Evans, a junior from Millbrae, Calif., notched her first Pac-12 weekly award after helping the Bruins record a pair of shutouts to extend their shutout streak to three to start the season. Evans also aided the cause in the Bruins’ 6-0 win over CSUN by heading in a corner kick early in the second half for her first career goal. The Bruin defense allowed just eight shots and four shots on goal on the week.
Brzykcy, a graduate student from San Clemente, Calif., received her sixth career Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week nod. She started both of UCLA’s matches last week and allowed zero goals in 120 minutes of play, playing 30 minutes against CSUN and 90 at Santa Clara. Brzykcy made two saves at Santa Clara to increase her shutout streak to 210 minutes this season. She also lowered her career goals against average to 0.66 while posting her 40th career win and 22nd solo shutout.
The sweep of the three weekly awards is the eighth in Pac-12 history and the first since Brzykcy, Kylie Kerr and Mia Fishel captured the awards on Sept. 20, 2021.
