Box Score PULLMAN, Wash. – Junior Margie Detrizio netted two goals as the Washington State soccer team (1-1-1) defeated Eastern Washington (0-2-2), 3-1, Sunday, Aug. 28 at Lower Soccer Field. The Cougars picked up their first win of the season with an opening goal from fifth-year senior Sydney Studer and the second-career brace from Detrizio.
Ten minutes into the contest, WSU senior Grayson Lynch stood over a corner kick, serving an in-swinging ball to the edge of the 6-yard box where Studer connected for a header into the far-left netting and the opening goal. The goal marked Studer’s first goal of the season and Lynch’s first assist of the season.
In the 22nd minute, the center official pointed to the penalty spot for Eastern after the Eagles’ Madison Kem went down at the end line on a challenge from WSU’s Aaqila McLyn. Kem stepped up to the spot and finished into the bottom left corner to tie the match, 1-1.
After the half, fifth-year senior Mykiaa Minniss found herself with space at midfield less than two minutes into the period. Minniss played a direct ball over the top to a sprinting Detrizio. Detrizio brought the ball down, took a touch towards the right side of the 6-yard box, and slotted home the game-winning goal from a tight angle. The goal would prove to be the difference-maker, and Minniss picked up her first assist of the season.
Detrizio completed her brace in the 67th minute as she pressured the Eastern Washington midfield into a giveaway. Senior Brianna McReynolds jumped on the loose ball and played Detrizio into open space down the left side. Detrizio took a couple touches before picking out the bottom-right corner of the goal, slotting it passed the diving Eagles’ goalkeeper, and cementing WSU’s victory with a 3-1 lead. The goal gave McReynolds her first career assist in Crimson & Gray.
The Cougars continued their dominate offensive season, outshooting EWU, 28-7 in the contest, and forcing Eagles’ goalkeeper Kamryn Willoughby into five saves.
