Cardinals Shut Out Northern Kentucky, 1-0

#23 Memphis

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky, — The University of Louisville women’s soccer team (2-1-0) claimed a win in its first road contest of the season as the Cardinals defeated Northern Kentucky (0-3-0), 1-0, Sunday night at NKU Soccer Stadium. Freshman Karsyn Cherry got on the score sheet for the second time in 2022 in the first half and it was all the offense the Cardinals needed to clinch the win.

The Cardinals were very active offensively to begin the game as they recorded the first four shots of the game and connected for a goal in the 15th minute.

The team’s leading point-scorer, Maisie Whitsett, stood over a free kick about 25 yards away from goal. Her attempt went towards the left post where Cherry rose up above the Norse defender and headed the cross into the back of the net.

The goal was Cherry’s second of her freshman season and both have come off the result of a Whitsett free kick. For the Cardinals, it is the second goal this season scored off a free kick and the third goal that came from a set piece. Whitsett has now collected points in each of the Cardinals first three games. She leads the team with six points with two goals and two assists so far.

The 1-0 lead held over the first 45 minutes as the Cardinals took the lead into halftime. The Cardinals have led at the half in each of their three games this season and held a 7-0 shot advantage over the Norse at the break.
