Bruins Earn Third-Straight Shutout, 1-0 at Santa Clara

Duke

Santa Clara, Calif. – Senior Sunshine Fontes continued her outstanding week, scoring her fourth goal in two games to lead No. 6 UCLA to a 1-0 win at Santa Clara. The Bruins improved to 3-0 on the year with three shutouts as first-year head coach Margueritte Aozasa led her squad to the win over her alma mater.

Fontes, who recorded her first collegiate hat trick on Thursday in a 6-0 win over CSUN, scored the game-winner against Santa Clara in the 12th minute on a long-distance shot from outside the box to the lower left corner. Ally Lemos was credited with the assist. Fontes’s goal was her fourth of the season, and Lemos’ assist was her second. Both are tied for the Pac-12 lead in those respective categories.

The Bruins nearly made it 2-0 in the 24th minute after Lexi Wright tapped in a rebound off a Sofia Cook saved shot, but Wright was called offside.

Santa Clara (1-3) had a good opportunity to equalize in the 64th minute with Colby Barnett’s header at the left corner, but Bruin goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy read the play perfectly and made the save by the post. Two minutes later, Cook nearly extended the Bruins’ lead after an outstanding service from Wright, but her one-timed shot over the head of the goalkeeper hit the crossbar.

The Broncos had one last chance to tie in the final minute, as Annie Karich fired off a long-distance shot, but Lilly Reale stepped in front of the shot to block it.
