Ex-coach urges £40m target to reject Man Utd to avoid ‘big mess’ amid Arsenal links

Man Utd-linked Gakpo

PSV winger Cody Gakpo has been urged by ex-coach Rene Meulensteen to turn down a move to Man Utd as the club are a “big mess” at the moment.

The 23-year-old has been a regular for PSV over the past three seasons and he enjoyed his best campaign to date in 2021/22.

Across all competitions, he grabbed 21 goals and 15 assists in 47 appearances. Seven of his goals came in 15 outings in European competitions.

Transfer gossip: Man Utd reject bid as Everton circle for forward; City p*ss star off through ‘fear’

This form was bound to attract interest from teams across Europe, with several Premier League clubs understood to be keen on him.

Arsenal and Leeds United were linked with him earlier this summer but it does not appear that the two clubs have made a bid yet.

Man Utd are also admirers of Gakpo as they are prioritising signing a new winger before the summer transfer window closes on September 1.

It is no secret that Ajax winger Antony is their priority signing, who is valued at around £84m by the Dutch outfit.

Now the cynics out there would rightly suggest that United’s apparent interest in Gakpo is there to pressure Ajax into selling Antony.

The Eredivise champions are remaining strong though and they would do well to get £84m for a player who was only involved in twelve goals last term.

Gakpo meanwhile is valued at around €40m with his contract not due to expire until 2026.

It is understandable if players are wary about joining Man Utd at the moment.

Their surprising 2-1 win over Liverpool on Monday night has boosted morale, but they are still way off from being in a position to challenge for titles.

Meulensteen was Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at United between 2007 and 2013. He thinks Gakpo should turn down a move to the Red Devils:

“Manchester United’s transfer policy is a big mess,” Meulensteen told Algemeen Dagblad.

“They’ve been chasing Frenkie de Jong for so long, that didn’t go through. Then they wanted Adrien Rabiot, that didn’t work either. Marko Arnautovic didn’t either.

“They are still trying to get Antony and Cody Gakpo, but I also have my doubts about that.

“Those guys are fantastic in the Eredivisie, but that is no guarantee that they can continuously make a difference here.

“If I were Gakpo, I would say, ‘thank you for the honour but I’m staying with PSV’. I would say to him: ‘boy, there are more clubs coming… at PSV you had the chance to play Champions League, you’re on that…
