Peter Stroud Named to 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List


DURHAM – Duke midfielder Peter Stroud has been named to the 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, as the United States Coaches announced the 38-player list on Thursday.

The Hermann Trophy, presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club, is the nation’s highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches.

Stroud, a junior from Chester, N.J., is one of the 11 players on the list that has earned previous All-America recognition from United Soccer Coaches after being named to the All-American Third Team after the 2021 season. He was also picked as the ACC Midfielder of the Year and to the All-ACC First Team, All-South Region First Team and ACC All-Tournament Team. Other postseason recognition included being named to Top Drawer Soccer’s Best XI First Team and selection to the College Soccer News All-American Third Team.

The midfielder played in all 20 games last season, starting in 19 of them. He led the Blue Devils’ non-defensemen in minutes played at 1,717 and recorded four goals alongside four assists to finish the 2021 campaign with 12 points total. As a freshman, Stroud was named to the All-ACC Third Team, ACC All-Freshman Team and was voted as Duke’s Most Valuable Player.

Fifteen players become Hermann Trophy semifinalists on Nov. 30 following completion of Division I All-America voting after the conclusion of the fall season. The top three players from a final round of voting will reveal the finalists on Dec. 7, with the 2022 winner being honored on Jan. 6, 2023, at a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.

Former Duke forward Thorleifur Ulfarsson was a Hermann semifinalist last season, and was one of three semifinalists that was a sophomore or younger. He finished the 2021 season as the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and in a tie for eighth place on Duke’s single season goal scoring list.

Duke opens the regular season on Friday night when they welcome San Diego into Koskinen Stadium. Kickoff between the Blue Devils and the Toreros is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
