Kevin Trapp snubs Man Utd despite game time promise over ‘shaky’ De Gea

Manchester United have reportedly missed out on their top goalkeeper target, with Kevin Trapp set to remain in Frankfurt.

Rumours of United’s interest in Trapp emerged earlier this week, after a less than convincing start to the season for David de Gea at Old Trafford.

De Gea’s weakness in possession was highlighted in United’s 4-1 defeat to Brentford, during which the Spain international failed to deal with the high press of the opposition and allow his side to play out from the back.

Borussia Monchengladbach stopper Yann Sommer has also been linked with a move to the Premier League side, but both he and Trapp were said to have reservations as they did not want to be a backup goalkeeper in a World Cup year.

The report claims De Gea is considered a ‘shaky’ candidate internally, while United are also conscious of him having just one year left on his current contract.

It’s claimed Trapp was considering a move to United, who reportedly offered him a four-year contract, and said on Monday nifght that he ws flattered by the interest.

“It’s a nice acknowledgement. But I can’t say anything about it.”

Reports suggest Frankfurt wanted £21m for the 32-year-old, but club director Markus Krosche said at the same event that the Premier League side had yet to make an approach, while manager Oliver Glasner insisted he wanted Trapp to stay.

“From a sporting point of view, I would of course like to keep such a great goalkeeper and person,” he said. “He is a great role model and always one of the first to arrive at training. But I’m not the final decision-maker.”

And, according to SportBild journalist Christian Falk, Trapp has now made up his mind.

Falk tweeted on Thursday: ‘TRUE Kevin Trapp informed Manchester United yesterday that he…
