Chelsea ‘prepare new proposal’ for Fofana

Chelsea target Fofana

Chelsea are reportedly ‘preparing a new proposal’ for Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana before the transfer window closes on September 1.

The Blues have identified Fofana as a key target with just a week of the summer window remaining.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are also attempting to conclude deals to bring in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Anthony Gordon.

Strengthening in defence has been a key focus for Chelsea this summer after Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen left the club.

Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella have already been brought in for big fees and they are now pushing to sign Fofana.

It is no secret that the defender ‘dreams’ of playing for Chelsea, but Arsenal legend Martin Keown has suggested that he would be better off staying at Leicester:

Keown asked: “Is Leicester always a stepping stone for players within their careers, even for their manager?”

“It’s not a good look, in terms of they’ve been very successful in what they’ve done and this is a sort of period of consolidation, almost, and hanging on to what they’ve got might be a victory. Clearly he [Brendan Rodgers] is going to have to sell somebody.

“But if that happens so late in the window, who does he go and buy now if Fofana leaves for all that money? But the success of Fofana is down to Brendan, so there’s a little bit of loyalty here.

“He’s trying to keep the player calm, he doesn’t want him to overreact. If the player says outright look ‘I want to go, that’s it’, I sincerely hope he doesn’t do that.

“He will be a top player but I think he just needs to stay there for another year.”

Earlier this week, Chelsea had a £70m offer for Fofana turned down. Leicester were said to be unhappy that this bid was heavily dependent on add-ons.

Fabrizio Romano is now reporting that the Blues are ‘preparing a new proposal’ for the centre-back.

The transfer guru adds that this will be for ‘around £75m’ with Chelsea ‘still deciding’ on the structure of add-ons in the deal.

He notes that the ‘deal is still on through intermediaries’ and Leicester are currently waiting for a fresh offer to arrive.

Chelsea host Leicester City this weekend at Stamford Bridge but Fofana will not be involved. Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers revealed on Thursday that he is currently training with the under-23s.
