Man City versus Chelsea among seven all-Premier League ties in third round

Man City vs Chelsea

Man City have been drawn to face Chelsea at the Etihad in the Carabao Cup and this is one of seven all-Premier League ties in the third round.

Man Utd will meanwhile be at home against Aston Villa in what is another appealing tie made during Wednesday evening’s Carabao Cup draw.

Arsenal v Brighton, Nottingham Forest v Tottenham and Wolves v Leeds are other standout ties. This is while Liverpool have been drawn to face League One side Derby County at Anfield.

Leicester are put in an impossible position by Chelsea’s very public pursuit of Wesley Fofana

Everton will travel to Bournemouth and Newcastle, who saw off League Two Tranmere on Wednesday, will host Crystal Palace in the other all top-flight encounters.

Prior to Newcastle’s victory in the cup, it emerged that they have reached an agreement with Real Sociedad to sign Alexander Isak for around £59m.

The striker has impressed domestically in La Liga and internationally for Sweden and he has previously been linked with the likes of Liverpool and West Ham.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe remained coy when asked about potential incomings on Wednesday night:

“It’s difficult to put a number on it but at least one,” said Howe, who has already brought in Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Matt Targett this summer.

“We were looking at the attacking areas of the pitch, I don’t think that’s a huge secret. I won’t go into any more detail on that.”

Speaking more specifically on the win over Tranmere, Howe praised his side for “finding a way to win”:

“It was hard-fought, competitive, they were very good defensively and physically,” Howe added.

“It was a good examination of our attitude, our organisation and our commitment and the lads passed the test with flying colours. They managed a difficult last 20 minutes superbly.

“This wasn’t about free-flowing football as much as we wanted it to be. We didn’t really get in any rhythm with the ball. Although we had a lot of it, I don’t think we penetrated enough.

“But what we did do well is we dug in and found a way to win.”

West Ham were handed a testing home tie against Blackburn with League Two Crawley’s reward for knocking out Fulham being a trip to Burnley.

Leicester will face Newport of League Two while Southampton will host Sheffield Wednesday and Brentford tackle Gillingham.

The other ties were Bristol City v Lincoln, Stevenage v Charlton and MK Dons v Morecambe.
