The 55 Premier League players who haven’t even made it to the bench this season

Phil Jones and Eric Bailly are among the unwanted Premier League players

Here are all the senior Premier League players who have not even made a bench. Some might not even be registered in Premier League squads. That’s a lot of waste.

Injured players are not included, and neither are 19-year-olds quite obviously bought for the Under-21s, a la Marquinhos.

ARSENAL
Ainsley Maitland-Niles: Latterly linked with West Ham as it becomes clear that waiting around and seeing who is sh*t is a viable tactic for a useful full-back/midfielder who has been left behind by Arsenal. He was in an England squad less than two years ago.

Hector Bellerin: He would quite like Arsenal to let him leave on a free transfer, thanks. They have form.

ASTON VILLA
Morgan Sanson: “If something lands for Morgan that he wants to pursue, we won’t stand in his way,” says Steven Gerrard of the £14m Frenchman.

Anwar El Ghazi: Finding somebody to take on his £30k-a-week wages after that rank Everton loan is a mighty ask.

Frederic Guilbert: Another in the Steven Gerrard bomb squad after returning from a Strasbourg loan.

BOURNEMOUTH
N/A: All hands on deck on the south coast.

BRENTFORD
Joel Valencia: Last played for Brentford in a Carabao Cup clash two years ago. Last seen playing 18 games without scoring a single goal in the Spanish second division.

Luka Racic: Not all Danes make it at Brentford.

Charlie Goode: Actually started four Premier League games last season but ended the campaign on loan at Sheffield United and cannot even get on the Bees’ bench despite injuries to Ethan Pinnock and Kristoffer Ajer.

BRIGHTON
Florin Andone: Last season’s five games (zero goals) for Cadiz are making the Romanian a tad hard to shift.

Matt Clarke: Had genuinely forgotten he existed; Graham Potter concurs. Signed for £3.5m three years ago, he has literally never played for Brighton.

CHELSEA
Marcos Alonso: And still he waits for Barcelona. You have to feel for him (you really don’t).

Marcus Bettinelli: Our first third-choice goalkeeper of the day.

Ross Barkley: A loan move to Celtic absolutely makes sense.

Michy Batshuayi: Everton will doubtless panic into signing him. To be fair, he scored goals for Besiktas last season.

Emerson: West Ham beckon for the Italian who has apparently only been out on one loan, which we’re not sure can possibly be right.

Baba Rahman: Six loans in seven years and he still has two years left on his contract. His last competitive game for Chelsea was in May 2016. We will miss him when he (eventually) goes.

Kenedy: Five loans…
