Carragher hits out at one player for not acting when Liverpool were in the ‘proverbial (sh*t)’

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher pulls his collar up

Jamie Carragher was critical of Virgil van Dijk’s performance as Liverpool lost 2-1 to Man Utd in the Premier League on Monday night.

The Reds Devils took an early lead on 16 minutes through Jadon Sancho before Marcus Rashford doubled their lead eight minutes into the second half.

Mo Salah got Liverpool back into the match on 81 minutes to set up a tense finale but Man Utd survived and got a deserved victory over Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Was Jurgen Klopp guilty of a clusterf**k with that Liverpool midfield v Manchester United?

Liverpool now have just two points from their first three Premier League matches of the season and a number of players were criticised for their performance on the night.

Van Dijk was partly at fault for United’s first goal as he failed to come out to the ball as Sancho teed up his shot and Liverpool legend Carragher reckons Van Dijk should’ve thrown himself at the ball.

Carragher said on Sky Sports: “It’s the only one thing I’d ever question van Dijk on as a player. If you’re going through a checklist of a centre back, he’s 10 out of 10 for most things. The one thing I do sometimes think is: does he lack a little bit of intensity at certain times?

“I know you never see him on the floor and that’s a strength for a defender – if a defender’s on the floor all the time, that’s not a good sign. But now and again, when you’re in the proverbial (sh*t), you’ve got to throw yourself at (the ball).

“That one there (the Sancho goal) he was literally stood there… It’s one where you’ve got to go flying out and just throw yourself at him (Sancho).

“Slide along the floor, make yourself as big as possible. You can’t just stand there! He almost made himself smaller, the way he stood. That’s the one thing I sometimes think: go, be more aggressive, maybe slide in, throw yourself in front of something.”

On Liverpool’s general performance, Carragher added: “The disappointment for me was that Liverpool weren’t ready for the game and for me that’s unforgivable.

“I love this team and what they’ve done over the last five years and you can’t throw that at them but it’s happened too often this season, it’s happened twice where they don’t look ready for a game.

“That’s something that will be worrying Jurgen Klopp. Tonight was a different game where they had 70 per cent of the ball and United done that to Liverpool tonight where they’ve looked intense.

“The intensity was night and day…
