Newcastle, Everton eye move for £10m-rated La Liga striker who ‘wants to leave’ current club

Newcastle target Gomez

Newcastle United and Everton are reportedly among the teams interested in signing Maxi Gomez, who ‘wants to leave’ La Liga side Valencia.

Both clubs have perhaps not been as active this summer as they would have liked.

A new striker has been a priority for each team but they are yet to strengthen in that area.

Newcastle targeted Hugo Ekitike both in January and this summer but the young forward ended up joining PSG.

Everton’s situation is a bit more serious as Dominic Calvert-Lewin is out of action for several weeks.

Anthony Gordon and Soloman Rondon have both been used as a centre-forward in the opening weeks as Everton have only netted twice in three games.

Speaking on signing a striker, Toffees boss Frank Lampard has been insistent that they need to bring in the “right player at the right time”:

“There’s nothing particular. It’s all relative, what you want and type of profile, what’s available, what’s on the market, how much would they cost, what do you want to spend, there’s lots of moving parts to that,” Lampard said last week.

“Dominic Calvert-Lewin is out on the grass now, trying to get fit. He’s an England squad striker when fit and firing. We saw what he can bring us at the end of last season and Salomon Rondon is here.

“I know everybody’s eyes are on that position and I’ve been pretty honest that we’re looking there but the idea that it’s desperation is not there. As I said earlier, we have to make the right move for the right player at the right time in a considered way and we remain in that position and we’ve got two weeks left.”

Valencia paid around £12m to sign Gomez back in 2019. His best scoring season came during his debut campaign as he netted ten goals in La Liga.

Overall, the 26-year-old has scored 23 times in 108 appearances for the Spanish side.

His contract expires in 2024 and he has made it clear that he ‘wants to leave’, according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.

He states that the forward is valued at €12m (£10m) this summer. German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach are keen to bring him in but they currently cannot afford to pay this fee.

Plettenberg also states that Newcastle, Everton and Fenerbache are in the race to sign Gomez.

He notes that Fenerbache are currently the side in ‘pole position’ to secure his services.
