Ten Hag baffled by Ronaldo attention after Man Utd loss, reveals he’s still in his ‘plans’

Man Utd striker Cristiano Ronaldo and Erik ten Hag discuss tactics

Erik ten Hag claims that Cristiano Ronaldo is in his Man Utd “plans” for this season but doesn’t get why he was “in focus” after their loss to Brentford.

Widespread reports have claimed over the summer that the Portugal international has made it clear to the Red Devils hierarchy that he wants to leave this summer.

Man Utd initially had no intention to allow him to go but recent reports have suggested that they have now changed their mind if a suitable offer hits the table.

Big Weekend: Man Utd v Liverpool, Chelsea, David Moyes, Amadou Onana

However, there seems to be a complete lack of interest in Ronaldo this summer, especially as Man Utd are demanding a fee for his services on top of the potential suitor having to fork out huge wages for the 37-year-old.

Man Utd was certainly not the Red Devils’ biggest problem in their embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Brentford last weekend and Ten Hag was baffled as to why the attention was on the Portuguese striker after the match.

Speaking to reporters at a pre-match press conference, Ten Hag said: “I don’t know why he is in focus after Saturday. It was the team performance and the whole’s team attitude, including Ronaldo. He is in our plans, that’s what I can see.”

On his side’s performance against Brentford, which was their second loss out of two this season, Ten Hag added: “I think I made myself clear I was definitely not happy, football you can talk about football, you can talk about the plan, philosophy but it starts with the basic stuff, the right attitude, fighting attitude and I didn’t see that from minute one.

“Bring it in every game on the pitch, especially Monday night.”

On planned protests against the owners ahead of match against Liverpool on Monday, Ten Hag continued: “I can only say the owners want to win and the fans we want them behind the club and I can understand sometimes but I am not that long in the club to see all the backgrounds, we have to fight together and be unified.”

Ten Hag knows the importance of the fixture against Liverpool, he said: “I know the rivals, we are the rivals. We have to win every game, especially this game.

“It’s not different to motivate this team because my experience with them is they work really good on the training pitch.”
