Cal Beats Pacific 2-1 To End Preseason

Cal State Fullerton

BERKELEY – Evan Davila and Nonso Adimabua led a comeback win for the Cal men’s soccer team in its preseason finale on Friday, as the Golden Bears defeated Pacific, 2-1, at Edwards Stadium.

All the scoring took place over a five-minute span in the second half, starting with Pacific’s 54th minute goal from Samuel Saiz.

In the 57th minute, Adimabua gathered a pass from Juan Martinez and slotted the ball by goalkeeper Eric Cotton from 15 yards out for the equalizer.

“It was awesome,” Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said of Adimabua’s goal. “He puts pressure defensively, wins the ball back for the team and then sprints up the field. Juan does a fantastic job to find him in a good spot, and then Nonso does what Nonso can do best – puts the ball in the back of the net.”

At 58:15, Davila fired past Cotton from the flank to give the Bears a lead they would never relinquish.

“Evan out wide 1-v-1 is very difficult to deal with,” said Griffin, who made his home debut as Cal’s head coach on Friday. “He can beat you inside and beat you outside. And that time he did go outside, something great happened.

Cal starts the regular season on Aug. 25 at Cal State Fullerton and makes its regular-season home debut on Aug. 28, when the Bears host Villanova.
