Cardinals Blow by Flames in Season Opener, 3-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women’s soccer team (1-0-0) started the 2022 season on a high note with a 3-0 win over UIC (0-1-0) Thursday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cards scored three first half goals from Karsyn Cherry, Maisie Whitsett and Autumn Weeks to propel them to their sixth-straight season-opening and 11th-consecutive home-opening win.

The Cardinals got on the scoreboard early in the seventh minute after the two goalscorers from the exhibition connected.

Whitsett stood over a free kick just outside the box and her attempt on goal was saved by the Flames keeper and deflected off the post. Cherry collected the deflection to the right of goal and flicked it back towards the net. Her shot got over the keeper and deflected off the inside of the far post for the game’s opening goal.

Moments later, Whitsett got in on the scoring action and doubled the Cardinals lead.

Morgan Bentley played a cross into the top of the box that was deflected out by a Flames defender. Whitsett was first to the ball and fired a rocket past the diving keeper and into the back of the net for the goal. 

The Cards got their third goal of the half off a corner in the 36th minute. Whitsett took the corner and sent a high, lofting ball that found the Autumn Weeks in the middle of the box. Weeks got her head to the cross…
