Man Utd are now interested in signing Barcelona forward and Chelsea target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, according to reports.
Aubameyang joined Barcelona for free in the winter transfer window after being banished from Arsenal’s first team by Mikel Arteta.
The Gabonese forward was stripped of the captaincy at the Emirates after he reported late following a trip to see his mother.
This was one of many misdemeanours which led to him having the armband taken away and inevitably being offloaded to Catalonia.
Barcelona essentially inherited Aubameyang’s Arsenal contract, which runs out in 2025.
After struggling for form in England for around 18 months, the 33-year-old had a solid half-season with the Blaugrana, scoring 11 in 17 matches in the league.
The Gabon captain has shown he can still score goals at the highest level, and as a result, Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has made him his priority between now and the end of the transfer window.
Tuchel worked with Aubameyang at Borussia Dortmund and has remained close with the player since their time together in Germany.
Barcelona reportedly want €30million for Aubameyang, less than eight months after signing him on a free transfer.
Unsurprisingly, Chelsea are not interested in paying that for a player who is 33 years old and has shown that he has disciplinary issues.
The Blues have been hoping to land the veteran striker for no more than €13m with Tuchel desperate for another attacker before the transfer window closes.
However, a deal to include Marcos Alonso could materialise. Barcelona have been pursuing the Spanish left-back all summer.
According to Gerard Romero, Man Utd are preparing to rival Chelsea for the signature of Aubameyang.
It is noted that Barca boss Xavi wants to keep hold of the player and Aubameyang is currently ‘silent’ on his future.
Erik ten Hag is eager to sign a new forward player, and Aubameyang could be an ideal addition for the right price.
The Dutch manager’s priority, however, is to sign a new central midfielder.
Man Utd have been hoping to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona all summer and had a bid accepted in July.
With a deal to sign De Jong looking extremely unlikely, the Red Devils have reportedly turned their attention to a player who is probably just as likely to snub a move to Old Trafford.
They have been linked with Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro this week and are ‘willing’ to fork out €80m to tempt Los Blancos into selling the Brazilian.
