Everton ‘make approach’ for £14m Tottenham-linked midfielder after Man Utd ‘decide to sell’

Everton target Garner

Everton have reportedly ‘made an approach’ for Manchester United youngster James Garner with Erik ten Hag’s side ‘deciding to sell’ the midfielder.

The centre-midfielder progressed through the ranks at Man Utd and he was a highly-rated member of their academy.

He had spells on loan in the Championship with Watford and Nottingham Forest in recent seasons.

Garner’s performances stepped up a level last term at Forest as he helped them earn promotion back to the Premier League.

The 21-year-old proved last season that he is now capable of moving up to play in the Premier League.

The Englishman has featured a lot for Man Utd during pre-season under their new boss Ten Hag. Though he did not feature in United’s losses against Brighton and Brentford.

The club stooped to new lows in those games, so it will be worrying for Garner that he did not get on the pitch.

Speaking back in June, ex-Premier League striker Noel Whelan advised Garner that leaving Man Utd would be his “best move”:

“I think Garner will be seriously considering making a deal with Forest,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“It’s going to be a tough ask to get into that United side, and I’m sure he knows that.

“He’s already started his progression at Forest. He’s built relationships with the manager, the fans, the players.

“I’m pretty sure Forest would love to have him permanently. I think the best move for the player is to leave Man United, for sure.

“He needs to get the game time at this stage in his career.

“He’s earned a place in the Premier League with Forest and he deserves more than to sit on United’s bench – because he’s been excellent.

“I wouldn’t be encouraging him to go back to United if I were his family or his agent, that’s for sure.”

This now looks more likely as United have ‘decided to sell’ their academy product, according to Football Insider.

Everton certainly need more recruits after losing their first two Premier League games.

Frank Lampard’s side have ‘made an approach’ for Garner, though the report states that Tottenham and Nottingham Forest are ‘also in the race’.

Football Insider report that Man Utd want £14-15m for Garner if they are going to sell him before the summer transfer window shuts in just over two weeks.
