Tuchel on Conte Scuffle: 'When we Shake Hands, You Look in Each Other's Eyes'

Sunday’s London derby had it all with both managers red carded after a sideline scuffle and Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel and Tottenham’s Antonio Conte both conceded they got carried away.

Tempers boiled over in the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, with Harry Kane nodding in an equalizer deep into second-half stoppage time.

Conte and Tuchel had to be separated by players and coaches after their customary post-match handshake turned into a prolonged push and shove, threatening to spill over.

It had been mounting throughout the game, with Conte celebrating Pierre-Emil Hjobjerg’s goal in front of Tuchel, while the German raced past the Italian down the touchline in a wild celebration at Reece Jones’ 77th goal which restored Chelsea’s lead.

“In the middle of it I thought I should not do this, but sometimes a match gets you totally, this match sucked me in,” Tuchel said about his celebration.

“It was pure joy and it may offend the opposition, but they did the same when they equalised.”

The managers were red carded after sparking an all-in melee with their handshake, with Tuchel explaining his anger at Conte.

“I thought when we shake hands you looked in each other’s eyes, he had a different opinion – it was not necessary, but a lot of things were not necessary,” Tuchel told Sky Sports.

He added: “We did not insult each other, we did not hit each other, we were fighting for our teams. I’m surprised that we both got a red card for that.”

Conte wouldnt be drawn on the scuffle, admitting their tension was avoidable.

“If there’s a problem, it’s between me and him,” Conte said.

“I think that what happened, we did enjoy. Next time I will pay more attention, just shake the hand and solve the problem.

“I’ll stay on my bench, he’ll stay on his bench.”
