August 13, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL) – Detroit City FC News Release
DETROIT, Michigan-The Detroit City Football Club fought their way to a 1-1 draw with the Oakland Roots Sports Club. After over 90 minutes of physical play, Le Rouge was able to even things up thanks to a last minute goal from forward Francis Atuahene.
The visitors had slightly more possession in the first half, but luckily for Le Rouge, goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher was able to come up with some great saves to keep the match scoreless.
Although Detroit City couldn’t ignite the offense early on, forward Antoine Hoppenot played an intense game on both sides of the ball. He gave his team two scoring chances in the first 45 minutes, and put his body on the line resulting in a nasty collision with the Oakland goalkeeper during a close play.
Both clubs played a physical game, resulting in multiple yellow cards being issued, including Detroit’s Hoppenot, Bryant, and Carroll as well as Oakland’s Azócar, Hernandez, Rito, and Fissorie. Tensions were running so high that even an Oakland assistant coach earned a yellow card for briefly entering the field while possession was on the opposite side.
After 50 minutes of play Oakland was able to strike gold offensively. Forward Charlie Dennis got a good read on the ball following a goal kick from Steinwascher and put the ball in the net to give his team a 1-0 lead. Steinwascher was charged with an error leading to the goal.
Detroit was able to maintain possession longer in the second half, but overall Oakland had 12 shots, including three on goal compared to Detroit’s 10, with three also being on target.
All signs pointed to a loss for Le Rouge until Atuahene, who subbed in for midfielder Maxi Rodriguez at the 72nd minute, took on the Oakland goalkeeper by himself on a pass from Hoppenot and buried it in the net to tie the match at 1-1 in the 87th minute.
Oakland threatened in the last few minutes of stoppage time on a corner kick, but were unsuccessful and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Detroit City will remain at Keyworth next Saturday, August 20 to take on Louisville City FC with kickoff set for 7:30. Le Rouge will be looking for revenge, as they lost to Lousisville in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup earlier this season.
