Gerrard ‘really pleased’ first win of the season; Lampard insists Everton deserved a draw

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard watches from the touchline

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have both spoken to the media following their first match against each other as opposing managers.

Aston Villa picked up their first win of the new season after defeating Everton 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts took the lead in the first half through a powerful Danny Ings finish before Emi Buendia doubled Villa’s lead with a tap-in.

New Toffees signing Amadou Onana made an impact off the bench as he powered into the box before setting up Lucas Digne to bundle the ball past his own goal line.

It was a positive debut for the young Belgian midfielder, who showed the club’s fans why Everton broke their transfer record to sign him from Lille.

Lampard’s side would not have been in the game in the end if it wasn’t for Onana, and the former Chelsea boss believes his players deserved a draw at Villa Park.

“I thought that we should have got a draw at the end of the game,” he told BT Sport. “Two or three good chances late on.

“When we were set defensively and organised, I don’t think they gave us too much problems, and we gave the ball away in a couple of transitions and they scored two goals.

“That’s the reality of Premier League football. You can’t make those mistakes and give the ball away when you are open. We got punished for that.

“At the end, the spirit was good, and you come away from it with a bad feeling thinking that you should have got a point from it.”

It was a huge result for Gerrard, who has been facing criticism after his side lost their opening Premier League match 2-0 at newly-promoted Bournemouth.

“I’m really pleased with our level of performance, I believed that if we found that level there would be a different outcome from last week,” Gerrard told BBC Sport.

“What we put in this week, the quality and the goals we scored, no-one can challenge the outcome, I thought we deserved it.

“We looked a different team today. It was tough conditions for both sets of players, but they were excellent in terms of the game plan. We really wanted to make it about their back three, and both goals have come off that.”
