Paul Merson has slammed Manchester United by claiming they will lose their status in world football if their transfer policy is allowed to continue. 

The former Arsenal and England forward claimed that United’s recent targets have all been ‘primark’ players, and insisted that the Red Devils should be ‘shopping in Harrods’ as they strive to strengthen their squad before the end of the window. 

Merson’s comments come after pursuits of Austrian forward Marko Arnautovic and Juventus‘ Adrien Rabiot, and Manchester Evening News reported on Friday that the club had also attempted an eleventh hour deal for Chelsea flop Timo Werner.

Merson wrote in his Daily Star column: ‘United should be shopping in Harrods, not Primark for players like Marko Arnautovic. I’m not surprised the fans kicked up a fuss about that and got the club to think again because Arnautovic is not good enough for United.

‘I don’t know what is going on at Old Trafford but they are making the same old mistakes time and time again in the transfer market. The fans must be thinking: “What is going on here?” and you can’t really blame them. 

‘If United want to get back in the top four, they have to find better players than Arnautovic. There probably aren’t many teams in the bottom half of the table who would sign him, let alone the top half.
