Impact Of A Scholarship: Mallory Mahar

Upon graduating from Maryland, Mahar started her visual arts career and went to Savannah College of Art and Design to obtain her Master’s of Arts. After that, she made a brief stop in Los Angeles—where she ended up crashing with her good friend Sarah Huffman and her wife at the time, Abby Wambach—before departing for Vancouver, where she has been for the past decade and recently attained her Canadian citizenship.

Mahar’s current job title is Senior Lightning/Composting Technical Director at Sony Pictures Imageworks. In addition, IMDB credits her for visual arts work on 13 other films, including Vivo and Hotel Transylvania 3 and 4.

“My job is at the end of the pipeline where we make (the movie) look pretty,” Mahar said. “We make sure all the lighting is in the right spots and check that everything is shaded properly. Basically, the look of the whole film comes from my department.”

The work requires immense focus and attention to detail.

“It takes 24 frames to make a second, and we basically look at every frame,” Mahar said. “I could be working on a four-second shot for months.”

While that work could be discouraging for some, it all comes down to competitive drive and motivation for Mahar, two things with which she’s very familiar.

“I always want to be the best and put my best work out there,” Mahar said. “That’s just another thing I picked up at Maryland.”
