San Diego Wave FC Falls Short to Kansas City Current

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego Wave Fútbol Club (7-4-4) fought hard today but ultimately fell 1-2 to Kansas City Current (6-4-4) at Torero Stadium. Amirah Ali came into the match as a game changer and scored her first NWSL regular season goal in the 88th minute to deny a clean sheet for Kansas City Current.


After give and take between the two sides, Kansas City pulled ahead in the 27th minute with a goal off a fast break. Kailen Sheridan attempted a save, but it was deflected into the net, bringing the score to 0-1. In the 39th minute, the Current doubled its score with a long shot to the top right corner of the net.

In second-half action, the away side earned a penalty kick in the 67th minute, but Sheridan impressed once again and recorded her eighth NWSL career penalty kick save and second in back-to-back games. The Canadian goalkeeper now leads the NWSL in penalty kick saves.

With minutes left of regulation time, Amirah Ali made a last effort to put Wave FC on the board and succeeded with a powerful shot to the bottom left corner. Assisted by Makenzy Doniak, Ali scored her first career NWSL regular season goal twelve minutes after entering the match.

San Diego Wave FC continues its home stretch on Saturday, August 13, hosting Orlando Pride at Torero Stadium, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. PT. Wave FC closes out three consecutive games at Torero Stadium on Saturday, August 20, against the Houston Dash for Hispanic Heritage Night presented by Televisa- Channel 12 and benefitting Chicano Federation.
