Brighton pick Cucurella replacement, Newcastle also keen; Magpies want Rennes winger

Reported Newcastle and Brighton target Adria Pedrosa defending a Barcelona player

Brighton have identified Espanyol full-back Adria Pedrosa as an ideal replacement for Marc Cucurella, who joined Chelsea on Friday.

The Blues paid a reported £62million to sign Cucurella after a productive season at the Amex.

The 24-year-old moved to England last summer for around £16m, two months after he picked up his only cap for the Spanish national team.

Graham Potter is now on the search for a new left-back with a huge void now left in his defence.

Young defender Levi Colwill joined from Chelsea on a season-long loan. The 19-year-old can operate as a left-back and a centre-half, though another defender is likely to join.

The Seagulls have been linked with former Manchester City player Angelino, who has been at RB Leipzig since January 2020.

West Ham have also been linked with Angelino – as well as Eintracht Frankfurt’s Filip Kostic – but are unlikely to make a move for Cucurella’s compatriot.

Another potential replacement for Cucurella is another Spaniard.

Espanyol defender Pedrosa has a year left on his contract and Brighton could make an attempt to sign him this summer, according to Mundo Deportivo.

He is ‘on the agenda’ for both Brighton and Newcastle United.

Espanyol, however, are hoping Pedrosa will renew his contract. There is a ‘good harmony’ between the player and the club, so there is optimism a fresh deal can be agreed.

Brighton could face competition to land the 24-year-old amid reported interest from Newcastle.

The Magpies have signed Matt Targett on a permanent basis but the report claims they are interested thanks to their ‘recognised economic muscle to attack targets’.

Another player Eddie Howe is believed to be looking at is Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana.

This is according to French newspaper L’Equipe, which claims Newcastle are ‘ready to move’ for the 20-year-old.

Rennes are in this season’s Europa League so the player may be against a move in the summer transfer window, though the project at Newcastle is an exciting one.

Sulemana has been previously linked with Manchester United and Liverpool, but opted to join Rennes from Danish outfit Nordsjaelland.
